The Solar Decathlon 2013 competition was fierce. Our team was up against some major national teams and consortia of universities, but Stevens Institute's Solar Decathlon entry held its own and came in fourth out of the nineteen university teams. Points were awarded to each team in categories ranging from Architecture, Marketing Appeal, and Affordability, to Hot Water, Appliances, and Energy Balance. Demonstrating just how close the competition was, Team Austria received a total of 951.922 points out of a possible 1,000, winning first place. The Stevens Institute team was awarded 939.176 points. The last-place team had a total of 774.742 points.

Why do we care?  First, the biannual Solar Decathlon is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy to encourage the development and adoption of technologies that will bring solar energy closer to a daily reality in the construction of new homes, and this year's Decathlon exhibited a large number of innovations. Secondly, our CSI Chapter was a sponsor of the Stevens Institute entry, contributing toward the cost through a Chapter donation, and by encouraging a number of our members to secure donations of construction materials to complete the project. The Chapter can be proud of its participation in the event, which was judged in Irvine, California, during the week of October 10.
